Wine routes in Slovakia
Slovak wines were awarded in the prestigious competition Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. It took place in Bratislava in 2013, 60 medals, of which 3 with the highest value.
As a result, Slovakia is ranked 6th in the country ranking.
There are 6 wine-growing areas and 8 wine-growing trails in Slovakia. These trails allow you to get to know the renowned Slovak wines – from white to pink, red and unique sweet wines from the Tokaj region.
The Tirnavia region is the cradle of viticulture. The romantic, slightly wavy landscape is covered with wineries and their interesting stories.
Central Slovak wine region
The Central Slovak wine region is located in the south of central Slovakia and consists of 7 wine regions (in 107 wine villages).
The basic white varieties include: Müller-Thurgau, Burgundy White, Riesling, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, to a lesser extent Traminer Red and Girl’s Grapes.
Red wines are made from blue varieties of Frankovka Modra and Svätovavrinecká.
East Slovak wine region
The eastern Slovak wine region is situated on the gentle slopes of the Vihorlat mountain range and on the eastern Slovakian lowland. It consists of 4 wine regions and (89 wine villages).
These sites are destined for the production of fine wine varieties such as Burgundy White, Chardonnay and Burgundy Blue. The cultivation of white moscatel such as Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and blue varieties of Lemberger is also widespread. Sauvignon, Grüner Veltliner, Red Traminer, Cabernet Sauvignon Saint Laurent are other varieties that complement the range of vineyards and are processed in the region.
Wine route of the Little Carpathians
The belt of towns and villages that are classified as wine-growing is situated under the mountains of the Little Carpathians and forms the wine-growing region of the Little Carpathians. Due to its size and importance, we are pleased to be the wine center of Slovakia.
The wine route of the Little Carpathians leads through the former royal towns: Bratislava, Svätý Jur, Pezinok and Modra, their neighboring villages and ends in Trnava.
In addition to the cultural and historical monuments, visitors will also be attracted by the diversity of folklore in the individual villages of the region, where they can spend pleasant moments in numerous wine cellars, taste excellent food such as roast goose with a glass of good local wine and listen to popular bands.
The region consists of 12 wine-growing regions and covers the territory of 120 wine-growing municipalities. White varieties such as Riesling, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Burgundy White or Blue Franconian varieties are grown here, including Blue and St. Laurent. Müller-Thurgau, Silvian Green, Girl’s Grape, Chardonnay and Portuguese Blue are other varieties that complement the region’s offer.
South Slovakian wine region
South Slovakian wine region is located on the lowland in the basin of the rivers Danube and Hron at an average altitude of 140 meters. This wine-growing area comprises 8 wine-growing areas (in 114 wine-growing villages).
The most popular geraniums cultivated in this area are Riesling, Riesling, White Burgundy, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet and Franconia Blue. Grüner Veltliner, Silvian Greens and Blue Palette St. Laurent are other varieties that complement the offer in the region.
Tokaj
Tokaj wine is rightly referred to as the king of wine and the wine of kings, as it has been served at all royal tables in Europe in the past. The gateway to Tokaj is the city of Trebišov.
The current Tokaj Wine Route, with centers in Malá Thorn and Veľká Tŕňa, offers ten types of wine (the most famous of which is the Tokaj selection). “Tokaj Choice” has won many awards beyond the borders of Slovakia.
The rarity of this wine route is the medieval Tokaj wine cellar carved into the volcanic rock. argillite. The cellar dates from the Turkish wars and was built to some extent as a shelter from attacking soldiers. Some cellars are carved to a depth of 8-16 meters.
